NAPABA Law Foundation Names
2022 Sharon and Ivan Leadership (SAIL) Scholars
Washington, DC (August 15, 2022) — The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) Law Foundation (NLF) announced today that two exceptional law students have been awarded SAIL Scholarships for their outstanding professional promise and leadership potential.
“These two law students exhibit the very best not only in their academic excellence, but especially in their demonstrated leadership and service to their communities,” said NLF president Nimesh Patel. “NLF and SAIL are proud to be a small part of these brilliant and dedicated students’ journeys as they continue to contribute to their communities, complete their studies and embark on their legal careers.”
The two 2022 NLF SAIL Scholars are Priscilla Guo and Victor Qiu:
Priscilla Guo is a second-year law student at Stanford Law School, where she is a member editor of the Stanford Law Review, co-president of the Asian & Pacific Islander Law Students Association, a Stanford Technology & Racial Equity Graduate Fellow, and a Gerald Gunther Prize recipient. She earned her B.A. magna cum laude in Technology, Policy & Society from Harvard University; an M.Sc. in Social Science of the Internet from Oxford University, where she was a Clarendon Scholar and an officer of the Oxford Union; and an M.S. in Global Affairs from Tsinghua University, where she was a Schwartzman Scholar. Prior to law school, Priscilla worked as a fellow and policy advisor for the Day One Project, developing technology policy proposals for a new Presidential Administration, and a graduate fellow for the Asian American Foundation, producing briefings on anti-AAPI hate crimes for local and federal policymakers.
Victor Qiu is a second-year J.D. candidate at the University of California, Hastings College of Law, where he is a Provost’s Scholar, a Legal Education Opportunity Program Scholar, a staff editor of the Hastings Law Journal, treasurer of the Asian Pacific American Law Student Association, and a CALI Award recipient (for outstanding legal research and writing). He received his B.A. cum laude in political science and an M.P.A. with highest honors from the University of Southern California, where he won the Diana Chudacoff Levin Award for Political Science and Civic Engagement and the Asian Pacific Alumni Association Karen B. Wong and Scott W. Lee Leadership Award. Victor has served as a congressional intern for Representative Ami Bera and has been an active volunteer for APA Family Support Services, the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies and the Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Bay Area.
“We are excited to welcome these inspiring and talented law students into the third cohort of SAIL Scholars,” said Ivan Fong, who with his wife Sharon endowed the NLF SAIL Scholarship program. “Both Priscilla and Victor are remarkable people who give generously of their time and effort to the broader community. We could not be more delighted to help them as they complete their academic work and become part of the next generation of leaders in our profession.”
Two unique aspects of the SAIL Scholarship program are that, in addition to monetary support, SAIL Scholars will also receive mentoring and leadership development from each other and from a network of legal and community leaders. “A second feature of this scholarship program,” said Sharon Fong, “is that the recipients commit to ‘paying it forward’ — by supporting each other, future SAIL Scholars and the communities in which they will live and work.”
The 2022 NLF SAIL Scholarship selection committee was comprised of the Honorable Theodore Chuang, U.S. District Judge for the District of Maryland; Esther Lim, partner at the Finnegan law firm and a former D.C. Bar president; and the Honorable Goodwin Liu, Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court.
NLF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that carries out its work primarily by awarding scholarships and fellowships that promote the interests of the Asian Pacific American community. Since its founding, the Foundation has awarded more than $500,000 in scholarships and nearly $1 million in fellowships and internships.
